The first REAL tour company in Beautiful Bohol...

Bohol is emerging as a premier tourist spot in the Philippines because, well it's fantastic!

There are plenty of people willing to take you to the Chocolate Hills or to see a Tarsier, but there is so so so so so much more to Bohol. But finding and getting to all the great places here can be difficult. That's why Barkada Tours evolved...

All our trips are personalised, so just talk to us about what you want and we will make it happen. Whether it be swimming in waterfalls, visiting remote beaches, exploring Bohol's lush rainforest, sweating it out on a hike, famous sights, fine dining or spectacular views, or just plain chilling out, Barkada Tours can do it. The Barkada difference: sites we currently have on the books.

The Barkada Philosophy

  • See what others won’t - we can take you to places most locals don't even know!
  • Small group size - personalised, low-impact service
  • Respect for locals - we wouldn't go into your space unless you were happy with it...
  • Environmental responsibility - we want to look after the place we love (and stay in business)
  • Having fun - "find a job you love and you'll never work". Staff have (almost) as much fun as the customers

Who is 'Barkada Tours'?

Barkada Tours was started because we wanted to give tourists the opportunity to see the real Bohol, the one that we love ourselves. The standard tourist trail in Bohol doesn't do justice to the people, places and atmosphere of Bohol.
Barkada Tours was originally developed by 3 friends in Bohol. But it has since evolved and is now owned by a team of 5.

Marla Reyes, born Cebuana but Boholana at heart, spearhead the operations. She lives the Barkada philosophy. If she isn't busy with organizing the tours, she's out and about enjoying the outdoors or hanging out at the beach with the Bohol barkada. Inspired by her love for good food, Marla came up with the gourmet picnic menus featuring the best of our favorite Filipino on-the-go dishes. For her, your Bohol adventure wouldn't be complete without it.

Scott Thomas Graham+, for whom we owe this brilliant idea, was an Australian who lived and loved Bohol since 2007. He explored firsthand all the destinations we have in offer and designed all the original Barkada Tours suggested itineraries. Due to his extreme passion for nature and adventure, we unfortunately lost him to a caving accident in 31, January 2010. As tribute to Scott, we at Barkada Tours continue to strive to maintain our philosophy of showing you only real Bohol experiences.

What's in a Name?

The word "Barkada" means "close friends" or "mates" in Visaya, the local language. The name captures the concept that customers are treated like a group of friends that have come to stay as our guests – it is our responsibility and pleasure to show them the places that we enjoy ourselves and are proud of. The name is also a combination of Visaya and English. It reflects a belief that the tours should provide the “stuff” that tourists appreciate, while paying homage to the “koan” – the people and places that are here already. It is an integration rather than a dominance.

Local Language Tips

There are a lot of different languages spoken in the Philippines although "Filipino" (or Tagalog) is spoken everywhere, as is English. But the language spoken in Bohol is a dialect of "Visaya", which is used throughout the Visayas region (stangely enough!). Visaya is spoken in Bohol, Cebu, Leyte, Siquijor, parts of Mindanao & Negros.

If you really want to learn Visaya, its possible to buy various dictionaries and phrase books in the National Book Store. Alternatively, the much more satisfying way to learn any language is to hang out with locals and just try!

Here are a few useful words and phrases in Visaya to get you started...

The really local stuff… (Only understood in Bohol!)

Eating in Tagbilaran

Tagbilaran

Garden Cafe (International Deaf Education Association)
A unique organisation that is helping deaf youth and adults across Bohol to achieve equality in education and employment. While in Bohol, make sure to visit the Garden Cafe (Tagbilaran and Jagna) where staff are almost exclusively deaf.
www.ideadeaf.org

Cainguit
A little hard to find, but some of the best seafood around.. Choose what you want from their display and then have it cooked for you. It sits right on the water on the edge of Tagbilaran Bay. To find it, go out Graham Ave. past Bohol Tropics (after the ferry pier) and look for a small sign on the left. A small set of stairs leads down to the restaurant.

Golden Place
Want cheap, good Filipino food? This is a slightly more sophisticated version of the Carendaria (local eatery). It usually has our favorite local dish "fish kinilaw". You can find it up a small street next to the Provincial Capital building, opposite the dunkin' donuts complex...

Eating in Panglao

Panglao

Bee Farm
This place is becoming one of the highlights of many people's holiday in Bohol, and for good reason. We are very happy to take all our Barkada there because they provide an organic, charismatic, calming alternative. Nice mix of Filipino dishes with a contemporary flare.
www.boholbeefarm.com

Cafe Lawis
Found in Poblacion Dauis, at the opposite end of Panglao Island to Alona Beach (next to the church). This is one of our favorite places to get away from the crowds and enjoy a coffee, light meal, or their sublime chocolate eh' (shot of hot chocolate with cream). We often drop by here as a last stop on our tours.

Getting to Bohol

ManilaThere are 2 Cebu Pacific and 2 Philippine Airlines flights per day from Manila to Tagbilaran (1 hr 15mins)

Tagbilaran
Most people prefer to stay at the beach rather than in Bohol’s main city, Tagbilaran, but if you want to be closer to the amenities of the city (shopping, ferries and airport, etc) then there are plenty of places to stay. Here are a few that we consider worth mentioning.

Dao Diamond
(about 4km from the heart of the city)
A little out further from the main centre but within walking distance to the bus terminal and Bohol's biggest mall. Dao Diamond is unique as it is one of the commercial enterprises run by the non profit organisation, International Deaf Education Association (IDEA). Barkada Scuba

Bohol is renowned for its amazing diving and snorkelling, particularly around Panglao Island. There are also some great dive sites in Anda, in the far south-east corner of Bohol. We at Barkada also love a spot of underwater adventure from time to time so we have made it our business to know all the best dive instructors, guides and dive shops around Bohol.

We can take the hassle out of booking your diving experience - no more searching up and down the beach for the best deals, best gear or best instructors. We know people who can help you in English, French, German, Dutch, Italian or Japanese!

**Don’t sweat, we have NO BOOKING FEE. We can book dives for the same price as you get direct from the dive shops. Just give us an email and we will give all the options and prices.

Discover Scuba

Maximum depth is 12 meters, so you get to see plenty of beautiful coral reef and fish.

Fun Dives
Already certified? You can’t leave Bohol without taking a dive or two. We can schedule you in to join a group or have a personal guide take you to your choice of sites...

Refresher Course
OK, so you are a certified diver but the log book is a bit dusty. If you have been out of the water for more than 6 month we recommend you take a simple refresher course (about 3 hours) to get you back into shape for more diving.

Open Water Diver Certification
In 3 to 4 days (depending on your own pace) you can be a certified open water diver, licensed to dive anywhere in the world. You will get all the knowledge and skills you need to handle recreational diving in and out of the water.

Advanced Open Water Diver

Be able to respond in an emergency or just a sticky situation. For certified divers that want to know how to take care of themselves and their buddies.
